Salvation Army Thrift Store
& Community Center
Client: Salvation Army of Greenwood, MS
Type: Community Space
Completion Date: April 2019
As a social impact design build firm in the Mississippi Delta, we often describe ourselves as "gap fillers", responding to design, construction and capacity needs when there is not another organization positioned to do so. When the local Salvation Army reached out to us in need of a new interior fit-out design within a limited budget we were able to put this value into action.
Greenwood's Salvation Army contributes so much to our city, providing employment opportunities, affordable clothing and household items, and their Pathway of Hope initiative, which offers targeted services to families and individuals to enable a path out of generational poverty. We were glad to help them continue their mission by designing and building the fit out of a new and improved thrift store facility, completed in April 2019.
The shared values between our organizations are evident throughout the design of the store and community center which utilize an existing building with minimal structural and plan changes. Upcycled materials were employed wherever possible, most notably on the salvaged lumber accent walls. Curtained dressing rooms allow customers to try on clothes (a first for the Greenwood Salvation Army location), while minimizing construction costs and allowing the limited staff clear sightlines for easy oversight of the entire shopping area.
